Help kids be Legendary!

Hi, my name is Jason, and once again during the Extra Life marathon this year, I'm going to be spending 24 hours playing the Legendary Deckbuilding Game from Upper Deck to raise money for the UVA Children's Hospital in Charlottesville, VA.

The UVA Children's Hospital program means a lot to me and my family. I spent the week following my birth there in newborn intensive care, unable to eat on my own. Without the care and attention provided by those doctors over 40 years ago, I would not be here today. Fast-forward to a few years years ago, and my oldest son was diagnosed with autism at UVA. We have at least two appointments each year for his doctor to monitor his development as he progresses through school and therapy. My goal for this campaign is, as always, an ambitious $980 in honor of his birthday (September 8th), because autism will always be a part of his life. Together with donors like you, we've raised over $16,000 for UVA Children's!

(When my main goal of $980 is reached, I'll extended the goal so that I can list out new milestones that will effect my marathon games, making them easier, harder, or even adding extra time!)

As we all know, 2020 changed everything. Children's hospitals need your help more than ever. It's important to know that your donations not only help provide for treatment and research, but they also help hospitals cover the costs for families in need. Vulnerable kids can't wait for a COVID vaccine. Parents can't wait to get their kids treated. Extra Life exists to help Change Kid's Health.

Kids like Kellan, the son of a friend. In 2019, he was taken to UVA Children's Hospital for continual vomiting just before his 4th birthday. There, he was diagnosed with an rare form of T-cell Leukemia. Now 7 years old, he's had years of chemo treatments and health scares, but has finally been declared cancer free! Your generous donation goes to help kids like him and their families.

I know that your financial situation may be very different this year, but I hope you'll help support the most vulnerable of us at this time. No amount is too small to give. Every donation is appreciated.

The game

The Legendary game system offers enormous replayability through millions upon millions of combinations of sets of Marvel superheroes against a mastermind and their villains. While the game supports up to 5 players, there is a strong contingent of solo players online. To support this community, I developed the website www.LegendaryLeagues.com where I run a new league of games for solo players every month. The website also includes other resources for players, including a match randomizer, a collection campaign mode to help players use their complete collections while eliminating repeated elements, and the hero browser, a filterable list of all the heroes in the game to help players find a good combination of heroes to build a team.

in 2019, I was fortunate enough to design the hero cards for the classic 1970's Marvel heroine Hellcat for the Legendary Revelations expansion set and then be invited to help playtest not only that set, but every set following it, giving feedback and experiences to help make an even better game!

With any donation of $10 or more, you can also give me a solo (1 or 2 player) match setup and I will play it. Make it as punishing or fun as you want! Promos!

There are a variety of promos available from the Incentives list on the side of the page. These are all unique and exclusive to this campaign! If you'd like a promo as a "thank you" for your donation, select it from that list. If you want multiple promos, you can make a separate donation for each one. (Though there are some bundles for Messiah Complex, as noted below.) 

Each unique promo has its own Extra Life Promo (ELP) number, noted below contains information about the fundraiser, the hospital, or stories from UVA Children's Hospital patients, families, and staff!

Destroyed City Tokens (ELP 1-5)

In 2021, to celebrate five years of Extra Life, I created a special set of cards to represent the five city spaces for use in games where they can get destroyed. Maybe Galactus came through and took a bite out of your bridge, or a bomb has destroyed the city's bank. Whatever your setup, these cards are a great way to add a bit more flavor to your city as it crumbles away. In addition, the back of each card includes information about Extra Life, UVA Children's Hospital, and stories of the kids who have been helped there, to remind you of your impact you're making to help Change Kid's Health.

Astral Plane (ELP 6)

To go along with the new Doctor Strange expansion, I have the Astral Plane promo. This card is oversized and foiled to add this new dimension to your Legendary games!

Messiah Complex: Investigators and Sentinel Prime (ELP 7-9)

There are also several promos available for the Messiah Complex expansion: Singularity Investigator (used with the "Hire Singularity Investigations to..." Veiled Scheme), as well Sentinel Prime (and the epic version, each used with the mastermind Bastion). The art for these promos were done by Nahuel Lopez, the artist for the rest of the Messiah Complex expansion! 

If you select the Messiah Complex Single Set, you'll receive one copy of each of the 3 cards (1 Investigator, 1 regular Sentinel, and 1 Epic Sentinel). Each of these cards contains a unique story from UVA Children's!

If you select the Messiah Complex Playset, you'll receive the same three cards as the single pack, as well as 3 additional Investigators and 4 double-sided Sentinels (regular on the front, epic on the back, without any stories) to give you a full playset of 4 Investigators and 5 of each type of Sentinel. (The double-sided Sentinel does not have an ELP number.)

If you received one of these cards in a previous year and just need the other, please message me in advance for instructions. I'm trying to keep the incentive list from having too many older options.

End of Turn Effect reminder card (ELP-10)

Maybe you're like me and sometimes turns get crazy and you accidentally forget that something is waiting to trigger at the end of your turn. Just place this shiny foil card on the table as a reminder. Here's the best part: it's available for free with ALL other promo card donations! (Limit 1 per donor.) Please note that the back of this promo does not feature a story from UVA Children's Hospital. Instead, the back includes the fundraiser summary from ELP-1 along with a URL and QR code you can share with others to help spread the word about this fundraiser.

Killbots (ELP 11-12)

These Killbot promos are designed to go with the "Replace Earth's Leaders with Killbots" scheme from the original Legendary core set. Each of these two cards features new artwork on the front and patient stories from UVA on the back. 

For $10, you will get one of each card, or for $25 you can get a "city playset" of 5 cards: 2 of each, plus a 5th card randomly selected from the two.

Maximum Promos - 2024 Catchup (ELP 1-12 playset)

If you're new and want all the things in one easy donation, select this option to get everything from prior years! That's the Destroyed City token set, the Astral Plane, the Messiah Complex playset, the End of Turn Effect reminder, and a playset of the Killbots!

Name My Cards!

I want you to name a lot of the generic cards in my game! 30 Bystanders, 30 Wounds, and one set of 12 starter cards are all on the plate here. Name a bystander after yourself, an NPC from a video game, or just something ridiculous. Make it fun! (And keep it family friendly and away from political messages too; thanks.) I'll take your submission, write it on one of these custom Extra Life labels, and stick it on the card, where it will remain... FOREVER!
