Extra Life 2019

This will be my fifth year raising money for Toronto SickKids Hospital via Extra Life. Last year, I broke the $1000 mark for the second time and I’m hopeful that I’ll make it a hat trick this year.

In the past, I’ve played EVE Online almost exclusively and streamed via Twitch. Last year, I had hoped to expand my game variety and even play some boardgames with my wife, but, as it turns out, the EVE Online community is incredibly generous so I ended up playing it the entire time. I suspect the same will hold true this year.

Charities like this have a special place in my heart for a few reasons. When I was in grade 8, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Thankfully, it was benign and removed successfully with surgery. It was a scary experience but one of the things I remember most, beyond the support of family and friends, was when they wheeled a TV and video game console into the hospital room, so that I could play video games.

When I did Extra Life in 2015, I mentioned how special it was because I had just met my cousin’s daughter, Sam, for the first time while she was staying at SickKids. Over the past few years, the two of them have become the family I see most frequently as we meet for Red Lobster every time her daughter returns for a check up. Knowing the good that the hospital can do is one thing but knowing the good it can do on a personal level really increases the desire to help in any way you can.

Here's Sam and I when we first met in 2015 and again in late 2018.

Thanks for taking the time to read and, if you were able to, for your donations as well. I know the hospital appreciates them.
