It doesn't seem possible, but this is my 3rd year as Captain of our Extra-Life team. As an avid gamer it all started as a way to have fun playing games while supporting Connecticut Children's Medical Center. The charity aspect of the event has now become a passion project of mine.
After my first year I wanted to get more involved; I did so by joining the Hartford Extra-Life Guild for their monthly meetings. The primary goal of the guild is to spread the word about Extra-Life and encourage more gamers to sign up for the event and support Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Greater participation yields greater visibility and more visibility is expected to yield greater funds to help heal kids here in CT at CCMC.
At its core, Extra-Life is a 24 hour gaming marathon to raise funds for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. For me, that means Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Donations are tax deductible and 100% of all funds go directly to the hospital. Donations can be made securely by clicking the "Donate" button on this page. The donations will help kids at CCMC; some of whom are going through scary medical situations that I can't even begin to comprehend.
This year I was incredibly lucky to attend Extra-Life United in Orlando. At the event I was introduced to the children from across the country who are here today thanks to the hard work of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Seeing the excitement and strength of those kids and their families inspired me even greater for this cause if it's possible.
At its core, Extra-Life United is a gaming tournament. Extra-Life participants like myself can sign up for specific games and compete for prize money that goes directly to the Children's Miracle Network Hospital of our choice. The individuals at the event were truly some of the most competitive, compassionate and charitable people I have spent time with. They make me proud to be part of the Extra-Life community.
I was of playing for CCMC, but did not plan to bring home anything significant to the hospital. I did not know what to expect when I left for the tournament, but I did what I could to prepare. I sparred with both my teammates Siegewolf and Bullwinkle. Sometimes my dogs Bailey and Luke would try to help prepare me for any distractions I might encounter during the tournament by jumping all over me during practice. I hoped I would be able to simply match the cost of the trip to the event. I was fortunate to place in 4 out of the 6 games I played.
Nidhogg: 2nd place
Towerfall: 1st place
Duck Game: 3rd place
Divekick: 2nd place
My efforts won $9,000 for CCMC, and placed me 2nd in video games at Extra-Life United. This qualified me for the 3rd seed in the Mystery Game Finals. I won 2 games of Inversus to place me in the top 8; then 5 rounds of Super Mario Brothers 3: Battle Mode; next was 2 games of "Hello Kitty Air Hockey"; finally I won 3 games of Disc Jam to win the Mystery Tournament and an additional $12,000 for CCMC.
In total I was able to bring back $21,000 for CCMC in the tournament, but the fundraising can't stop there.
Everyday kids get injured or sick and need help from CCMC to get back on their feet, so I'm going to be digging even deeper this year to find incentives to donate.
This year you can earn a copy of my beer rating book. This contains the descriptions, ratings, and notes for all the beers I have ever had (over 1240 at this time). There are multiple tiers available:
Check out the pages of my teammates as they too will have their own specific incentives.
