In August 2018, my niece went into atrial fibrillation while playing in a volleyball tournament. Lily didn't know that's what it was at the time; she felt tired and needed a break on the bench. Two days later, she went into cardiac arrest. That's when we learned Lily had a heart disease called ventricular cardiomyopathy. She was sixteen years old.

In the past year, Lily has spent many days in the pediatric ICU in the care of Duke's cardiac team. She's had a defibrillator implanted, a pacemaker installed, multiple cardiac ablation surgeries and cardioversions. Lily and her family have had to adjust to a new normal with no more volleyball or stairs, but the medical care she's received at Duke has also insured she was alive to celebrate important teenage firsts: her first car, going to her Junior prom, visiting college campuses. As I write this, she just found out she's on her school's Homecoming Court. She also has to spend three more days at Duke because she went into arrhythmia overnight. Her defibrillator shocked her heart back into rhythm, and she's now under observation for a medication change.

My niece has picked up new hobbies since her diagnosis, such as Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. She plays in one of my D&D campaigns, plays and DMs with her friends, and participates in Adventurer's League play.

With that in mind, this year I plan to stream some Dungeons & Dragons to raise money for Duke Children's Hospital in Lily's honor. You can affect the game with your donation!

Weekend At The WizARD-King's:

On November 2nd & 3rd, 1-4 pm EST, I'll be streaming a Dungeons & Dragons 5e game set in Eberron with the players Tholgrin, Vonn, Grim, Rach, and Kim Gee. They'll be reprising their Hangover characters for a continuing adventure inspired by the movie Weekend at Bernie's and the Tomb of Raiyum dungeon from Dungeons & Dragons Online.

Your donation can affect the game in the following ways:

  • Simulacrum's Spellbook - Your donation can determine what spells the simulacrum the party is babysitting can cast and the number of slots they have available. $10/spell level, and you can specify if you want the party to have a specific spell. For example, for a $60 donation, you can give the party a slot to cast disintegration.
  • Potion of Healing - For a $20 donation, you can give the party a Potion of Healing.
  • Inspiration - For a $25 donation, you can give a party member of your choice, or the DM, inspiration.
  • Monster Spawn - For a $100 donation, you can drop a monster of your choice into the Tomb of Raiyum.

If you make a donation and you want it to affect the game, please specify what effect you want to donate towards in your donation message. Thanks!
