In August 2018, my niece went into atrial fibrillation while playing in a volleyball tournament. Lily didn't know that's what it was at the time; she felt tired and needed a break on the bench. Two days later, she went into cardiac arrest. That's when we learned Lily had a heart disease called ventricular cardiomyopathy. She was sixteen years old.
In the past year, Lily has spent many days in the pediatric ICU in the care of Duke's cardiac team. She's had a defibrillator implanted, a pacemaker installed, multiple cardiac ablation surgeries and cardioversions. Lily and her family have had to adjust to a new normal with no more volleyball or stairs, but the medical care she's received at Duke has also insured she was alive to celebrate important teenage firsts: her first car, going to her Junior prom, visiting college campuses. As I write this, she just found out she's on her school's Homecoming Court. She also has to spend three more days at Duke because she went into arrhythmia overnight. Her defibrillator shocked her heart back into rhythm, and she's now under observation for a medication change.
My niece has picked up new hobbies since her diagnosis, such as Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. She plays in one of my D&D campaigns, plays and DMs with her friends, and participates in Adventurer's League play.
With that in mind, this year I plan to stream some Dungeons & Dragons to raise money for Duke Children's Hospital in Lily's honor. This page will update with times and details of how you can support and participate in this drive as I get things confirmed.
Extra Life funds treatments and research in pediatric care for patients like my niece. Your donation is tax-deductible and will make miracles happen for families who desperately need them. You can click the "Donate" button at the top of this page to make a safe and easy online donation.
