Derik Jones

Hey Y'all,

I'm not always a nice guy. I don't smile. I scare birds. I sneak up on people like a ninja and wait for them to notice me. And if an old lady needs to cross the street, she is on her own.

However, that is not the case when it comes to children.

Kids are generally cool. Sitting down and having a conversation with a child is like opening the door to the most honest conversation that you will ever have, whether you want to be in it or not. My son, Devin came to me once and asked me why I was fat. He then pointed at my chest, and said, "Mommy has those, too!" I stopped going to him with questions.

For all of the problems in the world, not a single one can be attributed to children. We can blame overpopulation on parents. Loud and obnoxious in public? Bad parenting. Kids who get trophies in sports where they don't come in 1-3rd place? Overprotective wussy parents.

Kids are pure. Innocent. And they have no power to control what happens to them. If an adult says go to bed? Guess what? It's bedtime. Doesn't matter if it is 9 pm or 6 pm and still light outside. You go. You may mutter, but you go.

A lot of these pure kids get dealt a rough hand, purely by no fault of their own. They will have less fortunate parents, or they will be unprepared for the life that they will encounter as they age. But the roughest hand is dealt to those children who become ill, and have no one to speak for them. The infants who cannot tell you where it hurts, and so they suffer in agony. The children whose parents are too poor to pay for the medical bills, or have no insurance, so they get turned away at the emergency room.

I'm gaming to help them.

I'm raising money and awareness for the Oakland Children's Hospital.

On Oct. 15, 2011, I'll attempt to play video games for 24 hours straight in hopes you'll support me by giving just $1 per hour ($24 total).

Your donation is tax-deductible and 100 percent of your gift goes to help kids.

My fellow Extra Life gamers and I are going to make miracles happen for kids. I can't reach my goal without your support. Any contribution will help, and all donations are tax deductible. Donating online is safe and easy! To make an online donation please click the "Support This Participant" button on this page.

I can't ever say that I am going to be a great person. I still don't think that smiling is ever going to fully be a part of my repertoire. And thanks to my son, I will be spending a lot more time in the gym. Old women? You are still on your own. But the kids? I can help them. I can do my part. And I really need you to help me.

Thank you for your time, support and participation.
